My brother and I have been in the acting world for about ten years and now that we're in our 20's, we're beginning to wonder whether it's time to move to Southern California. After living in east LA (Azusa) for 2 years straight out of high school and working on a few sets, I am acutely aware as to how difficult and sometimes miserable it can be. That being said: do you feel $8,000 between two brothers living in North Hollywood will be enough to survive? And how important do you feel it is to travel down with your girlfriend/boyfriend/family? They just are so ready to GO for it, that stopping to really think about the costs of everything is just a drag, and I know how that feels. It's so much more fun to charge forth pursuing our dreams. Unfortunately, you can't pay rent on all that passion as you and I both know all too well -- yes, as you know, I lived in LA for 20 years too. The few years where I DID get work, were when I had financial support from a husband, or from parents, or had money saved, to do nothing but go on auditions, not the times when I had to have a day job to pay all those HUGE bills (mainly paying back grad school and rent) - ug! I lived in LA for 20 years- I now live in Melbourne Australia where I teach acting. Like you, I get many people asking me about Los Angeles and I give them similar advice- NOT trying to stop them from going, but trying to get them better prepared. Most just don't want to hear it- this is what they need to hear. As you know most people there last on average a year or two... I saw many people with the same dream come and go- but they all had the same patterns- the ones who stayed there longer changed gears and took care of life at the same time.
