Kirsten,

Again, thank you. Not only are you providing a great resource for those us trying to navigate this business of acting but you have a great voice: extremely informed, warm and honest.

Hi JT - I personally LOVE Lee Strasberg Method. It keeps you so real and so grounded, and it changed my life with the studies I did in it AFTER grad school. I learned to be subtle in my choices, and use sense memories as a way to very realistically come to emotional highs and lows. Working on sensory exercises also helped me learn to slow down and use my body as a way to get the effect that I needed in a certain scene. I have never worked in NY so I don't know of any teachers there. If you are interested, what I would do is Google Method teachers in NY, then go and audit as many different private classes as you can. You will find the teacher! As they say, "When the student is ready, the teacher will appear." Thanks for putting your trust in me, all of you. And I wish you all the joy and creative bliss you seek! (not to mention, fame and fortune! ha ha!) - Kirsten

Kirsten,

Thanks for that confirmation, I was just hoping I was making the right decision. Can I ask whose method or technique you think works best for tv or film acting? Lastly when I do begin classes w/ acting coaches could you recommend any in NY?

Your site has been incredibly helpful, THANK YOU for your generosity in sharing your knowledge and experience!

Hi JT - Sounds right! I love all acting classes, just not the longer programs that lock you in. If you've never studied, it helps to get into a month long, or even a longer program, to learn the basics. Know that the more established programs (like Adler) will tout their "method" as the best, but take from it what you like and what works for you, and leave the rest. Programs are always political, but most teachers in them have studied many styles, and will teach a bit of everything! Good luck, and it sounds like you totally have your head on straight. - Kirsten

Hi Kirsten,

Thank you for excellent advice. Im a litte both of what you talked about, Im older 44, w/ a unique look and voice living in NY pursiung for now mainly a commercial acting career.
I've taken a technique class at Stella Adler and am considering a scene class. Ive heard of those acting classes by coaches that you've talked about but I always thought Id wait till I got some sort of technique under my belt since Ive never taken acting. These classes usually have a spectrum of acting experiences so I figured I should get a basic foundation first. What are you thoughts?

Much Thanks,
JT
