Young actors, in particular, might want to check out what I think is a very good book called ONE LESS BITTER ACTOR by Markus Flanagan. This book has some solid information that will help young actors keep some of the realities of the acting business in perspective. I have no financial interest in this book..I just think it can be a valuable reference.

Kristen,

Thanks again for your suggestions. I recently finished Rilke, Nee and Cameron and watched the Power of Myth. In short, each expressed very clearly concepts and beliefs that are true, for me. Rilke especially put words to a previously unnamed longing. The Power of Myth was amazing as well, transcendent even. Thank you.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading the articles on your site, Kirsten. I would heartily endorse your recommendation of Julie Cameron's book- an invaluable help to anyone working in the arts.
I take your point that there are not enough books on the market which are brave enough to explore the spiritual dimension of acting, but may I recommend a few inspirational acting books, all very much written from a spiritual perspective:

'To the Actor' by Michael Chekhov (plus the CD set of his 1955 lectures, 'On Theatre and the Art of Acting')

'The Golden Buddha of Changing Masks' by Mark Olsen (a series of provocative essays on actor's spirituality)

'The Actor's Way' by Benjamin Lloyd- (a highly readable and very moving epistolary novel by a Quaker actor)

'Free to Act' by Warren Robertson (sadly now out of print, but may be obtained second hand)

'Acting from a Spiritual Perspective' by Kathryn M. Bild (a positive, down-to- earth workbook).

I am an English actor/director/ drama teacher based in Scotland, currently preparing to give up his day job and go to drama school at the grand old age of 48! Your advice on making such a decision helped to clarify many things for me. Thanks again, Kirsten.
